Minorites Have Many Viable Options When Attempting To Further Their Education

With a black man in the White House, one can say the U.S. has made some strides regarding racial equality in the last half-century. Still, it looks like a glass half-full situation. While African Americans make up over 12% of the country’s population, the Board of Education reports black attendance at college is barely half that percentage. The dropout rate is also higher than average when compared to other races and this is even with the assistance of such financial aids as financial aid.

The issue is a matter of concern on all levels, from public agencies to private corporations. As such, there are a number of organizations out to rectify this problem. After all, these numbers mean many children are being left behind, especially those without money for college, a situation no one wants to see continue.

As one of the biggest reasons for both the low attendance and high drop out rates is financial, a number of institutions, both black and corporate, are stepping in to help get more black students into college. It’s an incredibly wide and diverse group. Here’s a sample of just a few of them:

The United Negro College Fund - One of the most esteemed of these charitable organizations, they have their own program that hands out $2,500 a year to high school graduates with a 2.5 grade average or better. They also help administer approximately 30 other funds, created by other charitable organizations to media celebrities. They advise anyone who applies for a grant from them to contact every one of these 30 other groups, too.

The Thurgood Marshall Fund - This charitable organization was founded in 1987, and dedicated after the late Supreme Court Justice. It has given out over $100 million in scholarships and grants to students who go to any one of 47 recognized historical black colleges. This contrasts with the UNCF, which is open to any accredited school, on campus or online.

The Ron H. Brown Scholar Program - Started after the untimely death of the former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, every year it gives out $10,000 a year to 40 new students who demonstrate what they describe as leadership capabilities. This money can be applied to any Title IV college of their choice, and the check is sent directly to the student, not the school.

Blacks At Microsoft Scholarship - Charitable organizations aren’t the only ones lining up with checkbooks in hand. Microsoft has two different programs on the subject. The Blacks At Microsoft curriculum is strictly for African Americans and awards high school seniors $5,000 a year towards a Bachelors of Science degree. Their other is open to all minorities and covers all tuition and fees to STEM majors with high grades and financial need.

What’s important is this is only four programs out of hundreds, not to mention the traditional such as Pell grants. Another African American group, Black Excel, has over 200 different groups. Apply for a Pell grant online and then see what else is out there.
